Improving student experience with an app

The ‘On Tap’ app for Birmingham City University is the first of its kind, enabling students of the marketing school to receive important notifications and resources directly to their smartphones.


Challenge

Birmingham City University needed a way to communicate with students that cut through the noise of their busy university email inboxes. Rather than rely on distributing important information as printed material around campus, we worked together to create a mobile app for students, which was a brand-new venture for BCU.

Solution

We designed and built ‘On Tap’, an app for the marketing school to deliver essential course-level information and resources directly to students’ smartphones, meaning they’d never miss another important notification. As far as we know, this app is the first of its kind in the UK.

The app is a marriage between Telerik and WordPress, enabling the client to self-manage the content. The client can add news or edit pages of the app from the user-friendly WordPress admin panel, as well as send segmented notifications based on a student’s course and year of study.

The app also features a degree calculator which motivates students by showing them their predicted grade based on coursework marks. Students can input the marks they’ve received so far, add their predictions for any outstanding marks and the app will calculate their predicted grade.

Results

The app is currently a pilot project for the marketing school, but we expect other schools to follow suit soon. Within the first three months from launch we’ve seen the following results:

  • Average session length of 7 min 35 sec
  • 305 new users
  • 830 sessions overall
